Biography

Irma Blank was born in 1934 in Celle, Northen Germany, and she was still living there when she met her Italian husband, with whom she moved to Sicily in 1955. This uprooting experience was the foundation of her work.  She found out that ‘there is no such thing as the right word’ and started working on her first abstract series Eigenschriften (1968-1973), resembling undone writings.
In 1973 she moved to Milan where she became a high school art teacher. This move induced a shift to the Trascrizioni series (1973-1979) and started a process of cyclic work, responding to inner explorations but also to external events. Across those years she started participating in solo and group exhibitions, mainly in Italy and Germany and, as prolific writer, she published her own texts in magazines and books. Furthermore, during this decade, she became involved with avant-gardist Italian poetry groups, notably with the experimental space Mercato del Sale, in Milan, founded by Ugo Carrera.
After participating in Documenta 6 in 1977, she became part of a more international network. That year, she did the first sound recording of her drawing and she did her first actions in a public space, illicitly applying her Trascrizioni sheets onto the walls of the Milanese underground.
A year after losing her husband in 1983, Irma Blank decided to spend part of the year in Düsseldorf where she kept a studio until 1993, and where she reconnected with her homeland sky and (re-)discovered the colour blue, to be found in her later Radical Writings (1983-1996) works. At the end of the nineties she returned permanently to Milan where she continued working in her disciplined and almost ascetic way, producing the latest series of works, the concurrent Hyper-Text (1998-2002), Avant-Testo (1998-2006) e Global Writings (2000-2016).
After a health problem in 2016 that immobilised the right side of her body, Irma had to learn how to draw with her left hand, which led her to work on the series Gehen, Second life (started in 2017) – ‘gehen’ means ‘to move forward’ in German.
That year, in 2017, Irma Blank takes part into the Biennale di Venezia, Viva arte viva, when the curator was Christine Macel.
She dies in 2023, in Milan.

Irma Blank naît en 1934 à Celle, dans le nord de l’Allemagne, où elle vit jusqu’à 1955 quand, avec son mari italien, elle déménage en Sicile. Cette expérience de déracinement constitue l’origine de son travail. Elle réfléchit sur le concept que « le bon mot n’existe pas » et elle commence à travailler sur sa première série abstracte Eigenschriften (1968-1973), qui ressemble à des écrits ou des journaux illisibles.
En 1973 elle déménage à Milan, où elle devient professeure d’art au lycée artistique. Ce nouveau transfert signe le passage à la série Trascrizioni (1973-1979), qui lance un procès de travail cyclique, celui-ci correspondant à des questions intérieures et des événements extérieurs. Dans ces années elle commence à participer à des exhibitions personnelles et collectives en Italie et en Allemagne et, en étant écrivaine prolifique, elle publique ses textes sur livres et magazines. Elle participe à des groups de poésie italienne d’avant-garde, comme l’espace expérimental Mercato del Sale, fondé par Ugo Carrega à Milan. Après la participation à Documenta 6 à Kassel en 1977, elle rentre sur la scène internationale. Toujours en 1977, elle enregistre le premier enregistrement sonore de son écriture et elle réalise ses premières actions dans un endroit publique, en appliquant abusivement ses feuilles de Trascrizioni sur les murs du métro milanaise.
Un an après la mort de son mari, en 1983, Irma décide de passer une partie de l’année à Düsseldorf, où elle travaille dans un studio qu’elle tiendra jusqu’en 1993 et où elle redécouvre la couleur bleue du ciel de sa terre natale, qui revient dans ses œuvres suivantes Radical Writings (1983-1996). À la fin des années 1990 revient définitivement à Milan où, de manière disciplinée et ascétique, continue à travailler aux séries simultanées Hyper-Text (1998-2002), Avant-Testo (1998-2006) et Global Writings (2000-2016).
Après un problème de santé qui en 2016 lui immobilise la partie droite de son corps, Irma a dû apprendre à dessiner avec sa main gauche et ce fait l’a emmenée travailler à la série Gehen, Second life (commencée en 2017). “Gehen” en allemand signifie “avancer”.
Toujours en 2017 elle participe à la Biennale di Venezia, Viva arte viva, dirigée par Christine Macel.
Elle meurt en 2023, à Milan.
